Wet Hard Long exhibits the enduring femme body under scrutiny of a patriarchal society.

Edging the audience towards the promise of relief, two dancers undertake exacting physical feats. Their bodies contend with obstacles, objects and elements – each, more impossible than the last.

Extended from Jenni Large’s 2022 KCA audience prize-winning work (Wet Hard), Wet Hard Long is an epic display of grit, glamour, and glistening jaw-clenching stamina. A slippery endurance piece demanding perseverance from performers and viewers in a tribute to the strenuous expectations which femme bodies continue to overcome.

Subverting narratives around sex and power, performing perfection, and avoiding failure, Wet Hard Long provokes questions about identity, desire, ownership, consent and the holy and arduous qualities of the feminine.

In this sinuous new work, the darkness of our&#38;nbsp;collective dreams unfurls around the audience&#38;nbsp;as they enter a nostalgic delusion that is grim,&#38;nbsp;glam, scintillating and sensual.

Creatures slither from a billowing terrain tempting us as they tear apart our need for escapism, story and solace. Faraway is a menacing reverie about the shadows we must&#38;nbsp;all evade. A floral and fetishistic exorcism for&#38;nbsp;the darkness that lurks around us.

Driven by the lure of vengeance, two performers whip, clack and screech in a tangle of sound, body and costume. 


Open wide, slip the leash, strip down.


The body is a weapon, and revenge is a complicated game.

Artistic Statement:
LIP is inspired by depictions of female revenge in cinema, from the 1987 blockbuster Fatal Attraction to the 2015 franchise Mad Max: Fury Road. I have also drawn influence from iconic femme fatale characterisations, such as Catwoman and Poison Ivy, whose physiological transformations into hybrid and hyper-sexualised beings are driven by vengeful incentive. The tired tale that female sexuality and the female body are dangerous proves female eroticism is a tangible power worth harnessing.&#38;nbsp;


My interest in sex, power and tension pervades this work. LIP is an outlet for anger, vanity, play and pleasure. The choreographic logic is built around the function of the sound and costume design. The sonic tropes by the remarkable Anna Whitaker, in conjunction with the fierce seamstress skills of Jarred Dewey, allowed me to sink deeper into recurring interests and touch the less familiar.


Revenge is cyclic, creative, grotesque, and horrific. Despite any motivation for closure, retributive action tends to rebound… Confucius said, “(s)he who seeks revenge digs two graves”…

“Lip is the performance that you must see to believe. More a Performative Theatrical Piece than a dance, this is part Hellfire Club, part revenge female eroticism and part esoteric transformations of hybrid and hyper-sexualised beings.

The opening – astounding.

A flash of strobe light, a jarring screech of noise. A soulful croon – the vocal of erotically clad Anna Whitaker, a sexual call to a demon or the Other.&#38;nbsp;Jenni Large, a red super-heeled masked nightmare rolls and contorts onto the stage. Ghastly yet thrilling, the two play upon each other, master and slave, slave and master as a soundtrack of crying overlays the techno thrumming soundtrack, also by Anna Whitaker. Un-believ-able.

Killer costumes by Jarred Dewey are totally next level. If you have a dream (or a nightmare) of a powerful female dominatrix who vibrates with sexual power, then here they are manifested in all their dangerous glory. The almost Japanese inspired costume of Whitaker is a fabulous foil as the two play an intimate game. Again, great lighting from Rachel Lee, which spotlights perfectly the two dancers, adding dramatic fade outs as required.

Brilliant choreography and the physicality of Large is impressive. As are the facial expressions of Whitaker – cold, calculating, yet primed for revenge.“

BODY SHELLS is a series of durational live self-portraits. Traversing multiple temporalities, exploring themes of reverence, exposure and endurance through the reflective and disciplined process of body casting.Stretches of self-determination slowly and cyclically generate plaster archives of the body, suspending memory through detail and debris

 The gallery begins almost empty. By the end of the exhibtion Jenni will have spent over 50 hours in a live creative process, documenting and re-documenting her body using plaster alongside reflective writings. The casts and writings accumulate steadily, suspended by hooks and chains, questioning notions around self-perception, self-worth, time and imperfection.

Truth Beauty Suffering explores the ironic dual between romance and capitalism. Two constructs born and raised alongside one another, till death do they part. Starved by profound loneliness, we lust for fantastical ideals while capitalism benefits from our fragile self-esteem… All is not fair in love and war.


Mirroring the socio-cultural tragedy of our yearning hearts, this twisted fairytale consumes and criticizes the romantic utopia. Star crossed lover’s sing, slap and smear towards and away from connection. What will it take for a love ethic to prevail?

“The final piece of the night and my personal favourite was Truth Beauty Suffering, choreographed by the award-winning Jenni Large. This boundary pushing work explored the relationship between romance and capitalism, love and war, loneliness and connection. Costuming by the award-winning designer Bethany Cordwell highlighted this juxtaposition with a colour palette of luscious reds and pinks alongside the khaki fatigues found in combat gear. Special mention must go to the coolest technicolour dreamcoat I’ve ever seen, made with ballet tulle and UV glow paint. Anna Whitaker’s score was urgent and pulsing; the sound system in the Powerhouse is simply incredible. The dancing, by company artists Tyrel Dulvare, Harrison Elliott, Lilly King, Taiga Kita-Leong, Lily Potger and Georgia Van Gils, was outstanding and provocative. The two moments of absolute silence, which essentially broke the piece itself into thirds, were particularly electric.”

Concerned with the impacts that consumerism and capitalism have on female bodies, ‘Body Body Commodity’ subverts objectification and rattles patriarchal conventions. Playfully asserting the profundities of feminine strength, grief and sensuality. 

Five celebrated female dancers; Amber McCartney, Ashleigh Musk, Georgia Rudd, Erin O'Rourke &#38;amp; Jenni Large and award winning sound designer Anna Whitaker animate a mass of pastel foam objects that litter the performance space, ‘exploiting and embracing their habitat’ the lines between object, body, power and product blurs. Galvanised by Anna Whitaker’s live sound design this is a visceral, visual, defiant and explicit demonstration of feminine fury and power.&#38;nbsp;

Hard-edged and vampiric, this ‘Phantom Femme Fatale’ is not a sexist figure of male fantasy, but a subversive character transgressing female subjugation with assassin-like stoicism.


Utilising familiar tropes of sex, horror and comedy, she strategically exploits her physical prowess by reclaiming stigmatised iconography, revering in the complexity of femininity. 


Choreographed and performed by Jenni Large, this haunting performance-art-dance piece straddles the entanglement of sex and power with jaw-clenching effort and sly innuendo.





(‘Phantom Femme Fatale’ is the love-child and solo iteration of previously made works. It is a remixed collage of movement, costume, sound and concepts from ‘Wet Hard’, ’S U C K E R’ and ‘Body Body Commodity’.)

Drawling en masse like languorous cows, sensual undulations catch fire then rearrange with militant order
Pleasure remains political
Our ceaseless appetite for the next thing becomes a monotonous slow-motion fever dream
A treadmill of effort 
Bear no delineation between the superficial and the salient
We are primal and modern, instinctively collaborative yet deeply vain
There is an obscurely alluring logic in this strangely cohesive world 
Infinite identities, a united front 
We make the rules but the rules made us…
Inspired by disparate references spanning film clips, TV show title art, A.I. and fashion, ‘Synthetic Seduction’ is an ensemble based choreography of moving images and rhythms which explores the seductive influences of media and popular culture.

‘Suckling at the breasts of horror, shuddering with effort, our temptation throbs, our flesh ruptures and we find ourselves pulled into a discordant cult-like nightclub.


Knives screech, dripping heat - pain and pleasure fraternise in this space between the living and the dead, here where our darkest desires demand our undivided attention.

“Jenni Large, inspired by Dracula, catapults nine vampires through your boundaries, brazenly breaking into your face. They thirst for your gaze, like fire enthralls a moth. Red hot passion flares from each dancer and kisses your eyes. They ignite into molten lead. Their melted fusion spits-out a sacrificial lamb, a reject, an outcast to be scoffed-down like crimson wine. Large’s SUCKER incandescently takes no prisoners.”

“In her video preface to SUCKER, Large jovially claims it as a meal you never wanted to attend but “you are here now, so eat up”. You could perhaps infer some Dracula-like activity on the part of the nine dancers (see the title, hear the screams and moans in Anna Whitaker’s score) but we must be seeing them after they have supped. Now they appear to be having a high old time as they prowl, writhe, slither, crawl, arrange and rearrange themselves on the floor in provocative poses and drag each other about. The dancers come up a treat wearing slinky bodysuits, long wigs, opera-length gloves and sultry expressions. There is spooky lighting, much of it red, naturally, and a terrific special effect.

SUCKER is to be enjoyed in the moment. It’s not the deepest work you’ll ever see nor is it as outrageous as Large seemed to promise, but what fun.”
